In the United States, it is important to be on time, or punctual, for an appointment, a cl
ass, etc. However, this may not be true in all countries. An American professor discovered this difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian (巴西的) university. The two-hour class was scheduled' to begin at 10 A. M. and end at 12. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after the scheduled time. Several arrived half an hour later. Few apologized for their lateness. Were these students being rude? He decided to study the students, behavior.

The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and a formal situation: at a lunch with a friend and in a university class. He found that if they had a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American student defined lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. However, the average Brazilian student felt the friend was late after 33 minutes.

In an American university, classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but also end at the scheduled time. In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at 12: 00; many remained past 12: 30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. While arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late.

The word "punctual' most probably means______.

A.leaving soon after class

B.coming early

C.arriving a few minutes late

D.being on time

NEW YORK (Variety)--Eight years after his death, prolific science-fiction author Isaac
Asimov has suddenly arrived as a hot Hollywood commodity, with screen deals for his novels and short stories landing all over town.A deal dosed late last week at Warner Bros to adapt the Asimov short story "The Ugly Little Boy" into a film. The picture will be produced by Denise DiNovi and Demi Moore as a starting vehicle for Moore. In other recent deals, Fox has optioned Asimov's most popular novel series, "Foundation,' for Shekhar Kaput ("Elizabeth") to direct; Paramount is working on turning "End of Eternity" into a film that Ridley Scott ("Gladiator") will likely direct from a script. by "Total Recall" co-writer Gary Goldman; and Sony Pictures Family Entertainment is developing into an animated film series "Norby, the Mixed Up Robot," a series of 10 children's novels that Asimov wrote with his wife Janet, who'll act as creative consultant. Most of the deals will be worth seven-figure paydays if the films get made.Asimov wrote more than 460 works in either book or short-story form. While he wrote some nonfiction and mysteries, his speciality was sci-fi, with futuristic stories that were alien-free and high on pro-humanistic themes. His work has influenced many prominent sci-fi filmmakers, but Asimov action had been sparse. The most recent adaptation was the Robin Williams picture "Bicentennial Man." Part of the reason was that Asimov' s sole passion was his books and his family. He was hardly pushy(进取心的) about getting his works adapted, known to grant film options for as little as $50.The catalyst for the surge in screen activity is that Asimov's estate is now represented by Crested By, a partnership created 1- 1/2 years ago by Vince Gerardis and Ralph Vicinanza, who currently handle the screen rights of about 200 major sci-fi, fantasy and horror authors.

1 Oliver Hoppe has been working at Hoopers and Henderson accountancy practice for eighteen
months. He feels that

he fits in well, especially with his colleagues and has learnt a lot from them. However, he feels that the rules and

regulations governing everyday activities and time keeping are not clear.

Oliver does not get on well with his line manager, David Morgan. There appears to be a clash of personalities and

reluctance on David Morgan’s part to deal with the icy atmosphere between them after David was asked by one of

the accounting partners to give Oliver a job. For the past three months Oliver has gone to lunch with his fellow workers

and always returned to work with them or before them. In fact they all have returned to work about ten minutes late

on several previous occasions. After the third time, Oliver was called into David Morgan’s office and given an oral

warning about his time keeping.

Oliver was not permitted to argue his case and none of the other staff who returned late were disciplined in this way.

On the next occasion the group was late returning from lunch, David Morgan presented Oliver with a written warning

about his time keeping.

Yesterday, Oliver was five minutes late returning to work. His colleagues returned after him. David Morgan gave Oliver

notice and told him to work until the end of the week and then collect his salary, the necessary paperwork and to

leave the practice.

There is a partner responsible for human resources. Oliver has come to see the partner to discuss the grievance

procedures against David Morgan for his treatment and about what Oliver regards as unfair dismissal.

Required:

(a) Describe the six stages of a formal disciplinary procedure that an organisation such as Hoopers and

Henderson should have in place. (12 marks)

根据以下内容回答下列各题, One of the greatest problems for those settlers in Nebraska in t
he last quarter of the previous century was fuel. Little of the state was forested when the first settlers arrived and it is probable that by 1880, only about one-third of the originally forested area remained, down to a mere 1 percent of the states 77,000 square miles. With wood and coal out of the question, and with fuel needed year-round for cooking, and during the harsh winter months for heating, some solution had to be foun d. Somewhat improbably, the buffalo provided the answer. Buffalo chips (干粪块) were found to burn evenly, hotly, and cleanly, with little smoke and interestingly, no odor, Soon, collecting them became a way of life for the settlers children who would pick them up on their way to and from school, or take part in competitions designed to counteract their natural reluctance. Even a young man, seeking to impress the girl he wanted to marry, would arrive with a large bag of chips rather than with a box of candy or a bunch of flowers. What is the main topic of this passage?

A.The solution to the Nebraska settlers fuel problem.

B.Life in Nebraska in the late ninteenth century.

C.The imporance of the American buffalo.

D.Deforestation in Nebraska in the late nineteenth century.

On the fourth Thursday of November, every year, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day. The
day is a national holiday which is set aside each year as a time to give thanks to God for our blessings (祝福).

Legend has it that the first English colonists (殖民者) in Massachusetts (马萨诸塞州) started the custom. According to the story, the Pilgrims~ first winter in the New World was difficult. They had arrived too late to grow many crops, and without fresh food, half of the colonists died from disease. The following spring the Indians taught them how to grow corn. In the autumn of 1621, bountiful crops of corn, beans and pumpkins were harvested. The colonists had much to be thankful for, so a feast was planned. They invited their Indian friends to join them in a large feast to share in the bounties (慷慨) of the land. This is the first Thanksgiving.

The traditional foods of the big Thanksgiving Day meal include roast turkey, cranberries, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, and Indian bread puddings.

Since the day is set aside for giving thanks, it has also become a traditional family day. Large dinners with many relatives are common throughout America on this special day.

A.In the 17(上标)th century.

B.On Thursday.

C.Last November.
