A Day in the Life of Citizen KYZ606 and his Pet Computer Daniel

Friday

8:00 When I wake up, my pet computer, Daniel, smiles at me and says “Good morning”. He makes me a coffee and chooses my “look” for the day.

11:30 At the gym. My computer knows exactly ____3____ I need to do. I don’t like doing so ____4____ exercise, but Daniel says I’ll have a heart attack at the age of 53 if I don’t.

13:00 Lunch in the office restaurant. We press some ____5____ on the food-ordering machine, and the pills arrive quickly through a hole in the table. Everything tastes really good today.

13:30 Back in the office, there’s nothing to do so I take a ____6____. Daniel will wake me up when I’ve had enough sleep.

16:00 Daniel has woken me up, but there’s no work to do so I do a bit of ____7____ online. I love shopping. Daniel helps me find a shirt that will look good at the party tonight. He really knows what I like.

19:00 Back at home, I watch a football match, although it’s not very exciting ____8____ Daniel tells me the result before the end. He does that with films as well – I get really annoyed with him.

21:00 Party in full swing. As soon as I arrive, Daniel chooses me a partner ____9____ will be compatible. She seems very nice. I order another whisky and a red warning light goes on – I am drinking too much again!

23:00 Time ____10____ bed. Daniel prepares my pyjamas and my dreams for the night. I think I would prefer to dream on my own, but anyway… It’s been a good day...I think!

It was a very happy family. The life was fairly well-off. Father, Leopold, was a music mas
ter in Austria. Mother was warm-hearted. There were two children, Marianne, a schoolgirl, and little Wolfgang, a child not quite four years old. Marianne was learning to play the piano, and day after day Leopold stood behind her as she practised. How patient her father was, and how cleverly he showed Maricanne how to play some particularly difficult pieces! She was making progress, very good progress, and that was excellent. And there, almost lost in the big chair, sat Wolfgang, who never had to be told to keep quiet when Marianne's shoulder, saying she had done well. At that moment Wolfgang climbed on his father's knee and begged to be allowed to play the pretty piece Marianne had now mastered. What a joke that was! Picking up his baby son, Leopold laughed and said," Look at your hands. You must wait, little man !"

There was no end of fun during tea, and Marianne had to tell her mother about Wolfgang wanting to play a difficult piece. When the meal was finished, Marianne helped to clear away the dishes. Suddenly Leopold got up. "Listen!" said he in a surprised voice. "Listen!" "Marianne is playing the piece better than ever!"

But Marianne was washing dishes in the kitchen.

His wife following, Leopold walked quietly upstairs, the lamp in one hand, his music book in the other. He pushed open the door, and there was little Wolfgang playing in the darkness. "I love it." whispered the child.

It was the beginning of Mozart's life of music.

Wolfgang was quiet when his sister practised the piano because ______.

A.he loved music

B.he liked his sister

C.he didn't want to make a noise

D.he didn't feel well

The young people who talk of the village as being "dead" are talking nothing but nonsense,
as in their hearts they must surely know.

No, the village is not dead. There is more life in it now than there ever was. But it seems that "village life" is dead. Gone forever. It began to decline(衰落) about a hundred years ago, when many girls left home to go into service in town many miles away, and men also left home in increasing number in search of a work, and home was where work was. There are still a number of people alive today who can remember what "village life" meant in the early years of the present century. It meant knowing and being known by everybody else in the village. It meant finding your entertainment in the village of within walking distance of it. It meant housewives tied to the home all day and every day. It meant going to bed early to save lamp-oil and coal.

Then came the First World War and the Second World War. After each war, new ideas, new attitudes, new trades and occupations were revealed to villagers. The long-established order of society was no longer taken for granted. Electricity and the motorcar were steadily operating to make "village life" and "town life" almost alike. Now with the highly developed science and technology and high-level social welfare for all, there is no point whatever in talking any longer about "village life". It is just life, and that a better life.

Finally, if we have any doubts about the future, or about the many changes, which we have seen in our lives, we have only to look in at the school playground any mid-morning; or see the children as they walk homeward in little groups. Obviously these children are better fed, better clothed, better educated, healthier, prettier and happier than any generation of children that ever before walked the village street.

By saying that village is not dead, but "village life" is dead, the writer suggests that______.

A.those young people who talk of the village as being "dead" are wrong

B.the two statements are against each other

C.village life today is rather uninteresting

D.village life today is no longer like what it is used to be

Happy hours are not necessarily happy, nor do they last for an hour, but they have become
a part of the ritual of the office worker and businessman.

On weekdays in pubs and bars throughout America, there is the late afternoon happy hour. The time may vary from place to place, but usually it is held from four to seven. After the workday is finished, office workers in large cities and small towns take a relaxing pause and do not go directly home. They head off instead for the nearest bar or pub to be with friends, co- workers and colleagues. Within minutes the pub is filled to capacity with businessmen and secretaries, office clerks and stock executives. They gather around the bar like birds around a fountain or forest animals around a watering hole and chat about the trifles of office life or matters more personal. This is their desert garden, the place to relieve the day's stress at the office.

At these happy hours, social binding occurs between people who share the same workplace or similar professions. They may chat about each other or talk about a planned project that has yet to meet a deadline. In this sense, these places become extensions of the workplace and constitute a good portion of one's social life.

For office workers and businessmen, the happy hour is their ______.

A.professional requirement

B.regular practice

C.refreshing break

D.unpaid work

Settlers of the Plains also had to contend with social isolation. The European pattern, wh
ereby farmers lived together in a village and traveled each day to their nearby fields, was rare in the American West. Instead, various peculiarities of land division compelled the rural dwellers to live apart from each other. The Homestead Act of 1862 and other measures adopted to facilitate western settlement offered free or cheap plots to people who would live on and improve their property. Because most homesteads and other plots acquired by small farmers were rectangular--usually encompassing 160 acres--at most four families could live near each other, but only if they congregated around the same four-corner boundary intersection. In practice, farmers usually lived back from their boundary lines, and at least a half-mile separated farmhouses. Often adjacent land was unoccupied, making neighbors even more distant.

Many observers wrote about the loneliness and monotony of life on the Plains. Men escaped the oppressiveness by working outdoors and taking occasional trips to sell crops or buy supplies. But women were more isolated, confined by domestic chores to the household, where, as one writer remarked, they were "not much better than slaves. It is a weary, monotonous round of cooking and washing and mending and as a result the insane asylum is 1/3 filled with wives of farmers."

Copernicus was born in Torun, Poland, on February 19, 1473. Little is known about his earl
y life except that his father died when he was 10. An uncle adopted him, his two sisters, and his brother. The uncle saw to it that the two boys received a good education. Copernicus went to the University of Cracow. There he studied such subjects as Latin, mathematics, and astronomy. It was probably at that time that he changed his Polish name, Niklas Koppernigk, to the Latin form. of Nicolaus Copernicus. In 1496 Copernicus went to Italy, where he spent the next 10 years studying at various universities.

In Copernicus'time people still believed that all things—the sun, the stars, and the planets moved around the earth. It was an old belief that few men had ever questioned. Aristotle had based his theory of astronomy on this belief. Because the Church had long been the center of learning, the theory was also linked to religious beliefs.

In 1506 Copernicus returned to his homeland. A few years later he began to work for the Church. All those years Copernicus carried on his work in astronomy. He had just the most basic equipment and, like other scientists of his day, made observations with only his eyes. Still, using mathematics and logic, Copernicus worked out a different theory, which held that the planets went around the sun.

Copernicus did not announce his ideas. He did not want to make trouble. But he could not hide the scientific truth. So he talked about his theory with his friends, who strongly advised him to have his work published. His great book, on the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies, appeared at the very end of his life. Copernicus saw the first copy on the day he died, May 24, 1543.

Which of the following is true about Copernicus?

A.He had two brothers and a sister.

B.He used to be called Niklas Koppernigk.

C.He lost his father soon after he was born.

D.He spent 10 years at the University of Cracow.

GenerationsofAmericanshavebeenbroughtuptobelievethatagoodbreakfastisonelife’sessentials.Ea

Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is one life’s essentials. Eating

breakfast at the start of the day, we have all been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the

family car before starting a trip.

But for many people the thought of food first thing in the morning is by no means a pleasure. So despite all the

efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the

number of people who didn’t have breakfast, increased by 33 percent.

For those who feel pain of guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies

in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast.

“Going without breakfast does not affect performance,” said Arrold E. Bender, former professor of the nutrition

at Queen Elizabeth College in London, “nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.”

Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and most

of the recent work involves children, not adults, “The literature”, says one researcher, Dr. Erresto at the University

of Texas, “is poor”.

The latest year for which figures could be obtained is _______.

A. the year the author wrote the article

B. 1977

C. any year between 1997 and 1983

D. 1983
