We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes
are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? .... When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it' s too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don' t really listen closely we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "You' re a lucky dog." That' s being friendly. But "lucky dog?" There' s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn' t see it himself. But bringing in the "dog" puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn' t think you deserve your luck.

"Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn' t important. It' s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven't got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone' s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

This passage is mainly about ______.

A.how to interpret what people say

B.what to do when. you listen to others talking

C.how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with people

D.why we go wrong with people sometimes

When I found out that my parents had invited the minister' s family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried in panic What would' Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners?

On Christmas Eve, my mother created abundant Chinese food. And then they arrived—the minister's family and all my relatives.Robert greeted hello, and I pretended he was not worthy of existence.

Dinner threw me deeper into disappointment. My relatives licked(舔)the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table.Robert and his family waited patiently for a large plate to be passed to them.My relatives murmured with pleasure when my mother brought out the whole steamed fish.Robert made a face. Then my father reached his chopsticks just below the fish eye and picked out the soft meat. "Amy, your favorite, " he said, offering me the tender fish cheek.I wanted to disappear.

At the end of the meal, my father leaned back and burped(打嗝)loudly, thanking my mother for her fine cooking."It' s a police Chinese custom to show you are satisfied, "explained my father to our astonished guests.Robert was looking down at his plate with a reddish face. The minister managed to bring up a quiet burp.I was shocked into silence for the rest of the night.

After everyone had gone, my mother said to me, "You want to be the shame as American girls on the outside. "She handed me an early gift. It was a miniskirt. "But inside you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different. Your only shame is to have shame. "

It was not until years later that I was able to fully appreciate her lesson and the purpose behind her particular menu. For Christmas Eve that year, she had chosen excellent Chinese food.

While acting may run in the family,it wasn't Angelina Jolie's only choice when thinking about her future. Although Jolie has studied her craft(技艺)since childhood,at one point the 26-year-old,who stars this month in Tomb Raider with her father, actor John Voight, wanted to be a funeral(殡葬)director.“I thought that the crossing over could be a beautiful thing and a time of comfort when people could reach out to each other.”

Tradition(传统)is always attractive and interesting to Jolie, who moved with her mother,Marcheline Bertand, and brother after her parents separated when she was two.“I never had one home. I never had an attic(阁楼)that had old things in it. We always moved,so I was never rooted anywhere. And I always dreamed of having that attic of things that I could go back and have a look. I'm very drawn to some things that are tradition, that are roots, and I think that may be why I paid such special attention to funerals.”

Finally, she chose acting.“Following in my father's footsteps,”she says,“is an interesting thing, because I think we speak to each other through our work. You don't really know your parents in a certain way,and they don't really know you. So he can watch a film and see how I am as a woman, the way I’m dealing with a husband who's been hurt,or the way I'm crying alone.”

第11题

When I was a kid I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I knew what I didn’
t want to do. I didn’t even really know what one was. My elder brother is deaf. Growing up, I ended up defending him and I often think that is what started me on my path to whatever I am today.

When I was approached with the idea of trying to create a landmine(地雷) campaign, we were just three people in a small office in Washington, DC in late I had more than a few ideas about how to begin a campaign, but what if nobody cared? What if nobody responded? But I knew the only way to answer those questions was to accept the challenge.

But if I have any power as an individual, it&39;s because I work with other individuals around the world. We are ordinary people--Jemma from Armenia, Paul from Canada, Christian from Norway and thousands more-who have worked together to bring about extraordinary change. The landmine campaign is not just about landmines--it&39;s about the power of individuals to work with governments in a different way.

I believe in both my right and my responsibility to work to create a world that doesn&39;t think highly of violence and war, but where we seek different solutions to our common problems. I know that holding such beliefs is not always easy or comfortable--particularly in the post-9/ 11 world. But I believe that life is about trying to do the right thing.

Most people tend to get caught up in going to college, then getting a job, buying a house and paying the loan. Somehow, I’ve had the desire--and the drive--to do things a bit differently. If enough ordinary people back up our desire for a better world, I believe we can accomplish extraordinary things.
