he fits in well, especially with his colleagues and has learnt a lot from them. However, he feels that the rules and
regulations governing everyday activities and time keeping are not clear.
Oliver does not get on well with his line manager, David Morgan. There appears to be a clash of personalities and
reluctance on David Morgan’s part to deal with the icy atmosphere between them after David was asked by one of
the accounting partners to give Oliver a job. For the past three months Oliver has gone to lunch with his fellow workers
and always returned to work with them or before them. In fact they all have returned to work about ten minutes late
on several previous occasions. After the third time, Oliver was called into David Morgan’s office and given an oral
warning about his time keeping.
Oliver was not permitted to argue his case and none of the other staff who returned late were disciplined in this way.
On the next occasion the group was late returning from lunch, David Morgan presented Oliver with a written warning
about his time keeping.
Yesterday, Oliver was five minutes late returning to work. His colleagues returned after him. David Morgan gave Oliver
notice and told him to work until the end of the week and then collect his salary, the necessary paperwork and to
leave the practice.
There is a partner responsible for human resources. Oliver has come to see the partner to discuss the grievance
procedures against David Morgan for his treatment and about what Oliver regards as unfair dismissal.
Required:
(a) Describe the six stages of a formal disciplinary procedure that an organisation such as Hoopers and
Henderson should have in place. (12 marks)

years his fee income was in excess of £100K a year and he had nearly 100 clients most of whom had been gained
through word of mouth. David recognised that these small or micro businesses, typically employing ten or fewer
people, were receiving less than satisfactory service from their current accountants. These accounting firms typically
had between five and ten partners and operated regionally and not nationally. Evidence of poor service included
limited access to their particular accountant, poor response time to clients’ enquiries and failure to identify
opportunities to save clients money. In addition bad advice, lack of interest in business development opportunities for
the client and poor internal communication between the partners and their staff contributed to client dissatisfaction.
David has deliberately kept the costs of the business down by employing three part-time accountants and relying on
his wife to run the office.
David had recently met Ian King who ran a similar sized accounting firm. The personal chemistry between the two
and complementary skills led to a partnership being proposed. Gould and King Associates, subject to securing the
necessary funding, is to be launched in September 2006. David is to focus on the business development side of the
partnership and Ian on the core services provided. Indicative of their creative thinking is David’s conviction that
accounting services are promoted very inadequately with little attempt to communicate with clients using the Internet.
He is also convinced that there are real opportunities for the partnership to move into new areas such as providing
accountancy services for property developers, both at home and abroad. Ian feels that the partnership should set up
its own subsidiary in India, enjoying the benefits of much cheaper accountancy staff and avoiding the costs and
complications of outsourcing their core accounting services. Ian sees fee income growing to £2 million in five years’
time.
David has been asked by his bank to provide it with a business plan setting out how the partnership intends to grow
and develop.
Required:
(a) Write a short report for David giving the key features that you consider to be important and that you would
expect to see in the business plan for the Gould and King partnership that David has to present to his bank.

spotted an opportunity for a new type of gift packaging. This uses a new process to make waterproof cardboard and
then shapes and cuts the card in such a way to produce a container or vase for holding cut flowers. The containers
can be stored flat and in bulk and then simply squeezed to create the flowerpot into which flowers and water are then
put. The potential market for the product is huge. In the UK hospitals alone there are 200,000 bunches of flowers
bought each year for patients. David’s innovative product does away with the need for hospitals to provide and store
glass vases. The paper vases are simple, safe and hygienic. He has also identified two other potential markets; firstly,
the market for fresh flowers supplied by florists and secondly, the corporate gift market where clients such as car
dealers present a new owner with an expensive bunch of flowers when the customer takes delivery of a new car. The
vase can be printed using a customer’s design and logo and creates an opportunity for real differentiation and impact
at sales conferences and other high profile PR events.
David anticipates a rapid growth in Gift Designs as its products become known and appreciated. The key question is
how quickly the company should grow and the types of funding needed to support its growth and development. The
initial financial demands of the business have been quite modest but David has estimated that the business needs
£500K to support its development over the next two years and is uncertain as to the types of funding best suited to
a new business as it looks to grow rapidly. He understands that business risk and financial risk is not the same thing
and is looking for advice on how he should organise the funding of the business. He is also aware of the need to avoid
reliance on friends and family for funding and to broaden the financial support for the business. Clearly the funding
required would also be affected by the activities David decides to carry out himself and those activities better provided
by external suppliers.
Required:
(a) Provide David with a short report on the key issues he should take into account when developing a strategy
for funding Gift Designs’ growth and development. (10 marks)
